Tiago Pitta e Cunha, CEO of Oceano Azul Foundation, addressed a meeting of the Group of the Friends of the Oceans and Seas of the United Nations, which occurred on May 17th at the Mission of Singapore to the United Nations.

Tiago Pitta e Cunha delivered a keynote speech focused on the need for the upcoming UN Ocean Conference to raise awareness about the serious environmental and climate unbalance of the ocean and for the need to build up public-private partnerships, which may bring real action to the ocean arena.

The Foundation CEO stated that “being able to address such an important Group of Member States, less than two weeks before the UN Ocean Conference, is a unique opportunity. To a certain extent, by inviting private sector stakeholders such as the Oceano Azul Foundation this Group of States is already opening up room for public-private engagement and interaction, thereby contributing to promote the goal of setting up alliances for ocean sustainability”

The Group of the Friends of the Oceans and Seas of the United Nations was founded in 2015 and it is composed by 40 Member States of the United Nations, which are particularly interested in the ocean’s agenda.

Oceano Azul Foundation, in cooperation with the Portuguese Mission to the United Nations, decided to support the participation of representatives of Small Island Developing States, in the UN Conference on Oceans.
