Advancing Blue Governance - in the European context

Organised by the Swedish Embassy in Lisbon & Oceano Azul Foundation

CONTEXT

The ocean plays a critical role in the global ecosystem, providing a home for millions of species, regulating our climate, and supporting human livelihoods. Despite its importance, it is often overlooked when it comes to decision making.

By better understanding the complex relationships between the ocean, climate, and human activities, decision makers can be better equipped to promote policies and regulations that prioritize the health and well-being of the ocean. This is of critical importance especially in the European context, given Europe’s long coastline, rich maritime history, and dependence on the ocean for its economy and environment. As a major player in the global economy and a leader in environmental policy, Europe has a significant role to play in promoting sustainable ocean management practices on a global scale.
