Blue Bio Value Business Accelerator 2nd Edition

BLUE BIO VALUE KICKS OFF ITS SECOND EDITION PROGRAM

The Oceano Azul Foundation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation announce the launch of the second edition of the Blue Bio Value Acceleration Program. This year, the program will host 15 startups chosen from 9 different countries in Portugal to accelerate their sustainable blue businesses and contribute to a better world.

The initiative aims to attract projects and ideas that represent a business opportunity along the chain of marine biological resources, with an emphasis on marine biotechnology, contributing to the development of sustainable products and services with a positive impact on the conservation of the ocean.

The program aims to provide the resources and support to empower new businesses linked to the blue bioeconomy to succeed and bring their innovations to Portugal, a country with access to unequalled marine biodiversity, infrastructures and scientific knowledge necessary to develop projects that revolutionize the sustainability of the ocean.

In addition to financial support, up to € 7,500 for foreign program participants and € 3,750 for Portuguese participants, the startups that stand out most during the acceleration will receive a prize of up to € 45,000 to use in the development of their projects.

In its first edition, the Blue Bio Value program hosted and accelerated 13 companies from six nationalities that acquired business management skills and received guidance from more than 40 mentors over a period of eight sessions. Of the 13 projects, three companies (one Dutch and two Portuguese) rose up as standout participants for the program.

“The Blue Bio Value program has allowed us to better understand our strategy and business model. In addition, it gave us positive exposure to potential collaborators and investors, “said Radi Hamidjaja, Dutch scientist at the Hoekmine project, one of the distinguished startups in the first edition of Blue Bio Value.

The 2019 edition of Blue Bio Value will take place between October 8th and November 6th in Lisbon and Porto. The program is sponsored by the Oceano Azul Foundation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in partnership with Fábrica de Startups, the Bluebio Alliance and Faber Ventures. This year the program will have Impact Hub, CIIMAR and the School of Biotechnology as hosts.

The Oceano Azul Foundation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation have committed to investing a minimum of 1 million euros in the first three years of implementing the Blue Bio Value program and intend to accelerate 15 Portuguese and foreign companies by 2019.
