Strategic Advising on Ocean Education

A qualified generation of citizens who are informed, responsible, and active in protecting the ocean.

A qualified generation of citizens who are informed, responsible, and active in protecting the ocean will value it and will make more responsible, and better conscious decisions in the future. Oceano Azul Foundation sees the education of the new generations as fundamental to changing behaviour and reducing the gap between citizens and the ocean.

Advising on a Blue Curriculum

Based on the results of Educating for a Blue Generation pilot-program, the working group “Ocean Education”, led by the Portuguese Ministry of Education, in direct collaboration with Oceano Azul Foundation, produced 15 recommendations for scaling the pilot-programme to all Portuguese primary schools, and to including the ocean in the curriculum.

To support this decision, Oceano Azul Foundation produced a guiding document, “Blue Generation – Students Profile”, that deepens the sustainability principle of the curricular document “Student’s Profile by the end of compulsory schooling”. It proposes the principles, values, and skills that students should develop when following a curriculum that incorporates ocean literacy.

International advising (UN High-Level Panel)

Oceano Azul Foundation participated in the United Nations High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession, aiming to include the need to integrate ocean literacy into curricula as a cross-cutting issue and to prepare teachers through adequate quality training and educational resource.

Oceano Azul Foundation also sits on the Advisory Board of the European ocean literacy platform European Ocean Coallition (EU4Ocean). This allows the Foundation to approach political decision-makers and pave the way for the replication of the Foundation’s educational model to other geographies in the coming years.
