Target

Portuguese Marine Protected Areas

Impact

- Synthetizing all information relative to Portuguese MPAs;

- Evaluate the governance model of both coastal and offshore MPAs and propose concrete measures;

- Identify the MPAs performance and compare it to the ones of the Mediterranean where WWF already operates.

Description

There is currently no diagnosis about Portuguese MPAs. This is therefore an important contribution to understand the current status of MPAs in Portugal. The results, which will be delivered to the Ministers of the Environment and of the Sea, will be valuable to support current and future efforts establishing new MPAs in Portugal and to increase the effectiveness of the ones already established.

The Foundation and the Oceanário de Lisboa wish to be active part in this process.

This project started in November 2016.
