Belém Statement on Atlantic Research and Innovation Cooperation signed in Lisbon

The European Union, Brazil and South Africa signed in Lisbon a cooperation agreement for research and innovation in the Atlantic Ocean. The Belém Statement – named this way for having been signed in the Belém Tower on July 13, 2017 – underlines the “fundamental role” of the oceans “in the development of national and regional economies in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals And combating climate change”.

This joint commitment was sealed during the conference “The New Era of Blue Enlightenment”, which was attended by the Oceano Azul Foundation. Tiago Pitta e Cunha, Foundation´s CEO, was a keynote speaker at the roundtable “Engaging Foundations and the Private Sector”. At the conference, a jellyfish made of empty plastic bottles was exhibited.
