Impact

Attention to the linkages between climate and oceans and influence the conference’s conclusions.

Description

The co-organizers include the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission/UNESCO; the Ocean Policy Research Institute, Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan; the Oceano Azul Foundation and Oceanário de Lisboa; and the World Bank.

During this Day, the Global Ocean Forum highlighted the initiative "Toward a Strategic Action Roadmap on Oceans and Climate: 2016-2021" prepared by the International Expert Working Group on Oceans and Climate. The Roadmap is intended to provide a vision for action regarding ocean and climate in the next five years—with a sense of urgency.

Supporting this Oceans Action Day at the Climate Conference allowed to raise attention to the linkages between climate and ocean and influence the conference’s conclusions when addressing the role the ocean play in mitigating climate change effects. The Oceano Azul Foundation was one of the key supporters of this initiative and public recognition was obtained for this funding.

This initiative occurred in November 2016.
