In November 2016, the Oceans Action Day was held at the Climate Change Conference in Marrakech, organized by the Government of Morocco, Prince Albert II of the Monaco Foundation, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Global Ocean Forum, and the Ocean and Climate Platform. The co-organizers of the event include the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission/UNESCO, the Ocean Policy Research Institute, Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan, the World Bank, as well as the Oceano Azul Foundation and Oceanário de Lisboa.
The Global Ocean Forum highlighted the initiative, "Toward a Strategic Action Roadmap on Oceans and Climate: 2016-2021," which was prepared by the International Expert Working Group on Oceans and Climate. This roadmap is intended to provide a vision for urgent action regarding ocean and climate in the next five years.
Oceans Action Day at the Climate Conference enforced and raised awareness surrounding the integral links between the climate and the ocean, addressing the role the ocean plays in mitigating the effects of climate change. As a key supporter of this initiative, the Oceano Azul Foundation was able to contribute to and elevate the conversation surrounding the climate-ocean nexus and the crucial need to act.
